Best Time to Walk the Camino de Santiago

One of the most common questions I hear is: “When is the best time to walk the Camino de Santiago?”

After walking a lot of kms. and talking with pilgrims from all over the world, I’ve learned something important: there is no perfect time — only the right time for you.

Spring (April to June)

Spring is one of the most loved seasons on the Camino.
The landscape is green, the temperatures are comfortable, and the Camino slowly comes back to life after winter.

It’s a beautiful time to walk if you enjoy balance: not too crowded, not too quiet.

Summer (July and August)

Summer brings long days, strong sun, and many pilgrims.
Yes, it can be hot. Yes, it can be busy.
But it is also full of energy, friendships, and shared meals at long tables.

Many lifelong Camino friendships start in summer.

Autumn (September and October)

Autumn is reflective.
The days are shorter, the pace is slower, and conversations go deeper.

If you enjoy walking with space, thinking while you walk, and cooler temperatures, autumn might be your season.

Winter (December and January)

Winter is quiet, demanding, and honest.
It strips the Camino down to its essence.
It’s not for everyone — but for some pilgrims, it becomes unforgettable.

In-between Months (November, February, March)

I have enjoyed, by myself, much more in these months. Weather is not extremely hot or cold; pilgrims on their journeys are few, the roads are more calm and friendly, but not all Caminos have all hotels and albergues open (so adventure is best!).

I've found more real pilgrims in these opportunities than hidden tourists ...

Final Thoughts

The Camino is not about choosing the “best” month.
It’s about choosing the moment when you are ready to walk.
